Cambridge Innovation Centers (CIC) are in the real estate industry where, along with office spaces, the brand offers turnkey lab space companies can rent on a month per month basis. These lab spaces include lab equipment made available through CIC partnerships within the industry, and clients can rent a single lab bench to upwards of thirty-five at a time, depending on their needs. When CIC wanted to offer a gift to its clients to show appreciation, they came to Playwell Bricks to commission a custom lab bench set.
A Good Brand Fit
Playwell’s contact at CIC explained that they’d come across custom brick sets at various industry trade shows, including lab sets, which had piqued their interest. “One of the quirks of our CIC coworking spaces is that each one features a LEGO® wall,” they told Playwell, so a custom brick would fit very well into their brand identity as a gift for their premium clients.
For their laboratory space clients, CIC wanted Playwell to design a custom lab bench set. They shared photos of what these labs look like in CIC spaces for the designer to work from.
Creating the Lab Bench
Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang soon had a concept ready for the client. These concepts are never meant to be the final design, but a means to ensure the client and the designer are on the same page. The client’s suggestions are then taken into account, and the design is updated. In this case, the client liked the lab bench, but asked for a pop of their brand colour orange as a pipette and specimen jar to complete the lab look.
The Playwell graphics team added the CIC logo to the larger side of the lab bench, using the canvas created by the cupboard to host a decal.
When the build instructions were created, they included a thank-you message from CIC to their clients “for building your lab with CIC.” When their recipients receive their gifts and open the instructions, this will be the first thing they see, connecting the entire experience to their greater experience as a CIC client.
