As a nonprofit, the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) of Texas hosts many events throughout the year. They’re no stranger to promotional items, but sometimes an association needs something a little out of the ordinary. Something fun that captures attention, ensures engagement, and creates a positive experience. That’s one of the many reasons Playwell Bricks was proud to provide them with a custom Playwell Bricks set of their classic redfish logo.
WHY THE FISH?
The fish on display in this set is not just any fish, it’s a Texas red drum, which represents one of the CCA’s success stories. In the 1970’s, the redfish was overfished and stocks had dwindled to record lows.
Through a series of legislation and fisheries management techniques, the CCA and partner organizations worked to restock the redfish. Because of these efforts, the gulf now supports a healthy redfish population and the fish has become a symbol of conservation done well.
It’s no wonder why the CCA would want this special fish recreated as a promotional gift.
DESIGNING THE FISH
Playwell Bricks designer Tim Howell says “it’s always a fun challenge to create a model of a living creature from plastic bricks. On a small model like this, it can take some time to come up with a good combination of colors and shapes that represent the real thing.
“The fins on the top and bottom of the body are created by turning the building bricks different directions. They were then connected to the body with hidden clips. This was done to get both the shapes and the stripes to look similar to the actual fish.”
It was Tim’s idea to create the base, working off a picture he found in the CCA’s archives. “The base looks like a seabed with plants. I felt this gave the overall model more context and a better final result.”
