Marketing Magic for APS

When the fine folks at APS first saw a custom brick set at a tradeshow, they knew they wanted one of their own. That’s when they asked their marketing agency to contact Playwell Bricks and make it happen.
Engaging the Public
Playwell Bricks’ first contact about this project was with a representative from APS’ marketing agency, Performance Marketing. They explained that someone at APS had seen buildable brick sets at marketing events and asked Performance Marketing to find out how APS could get a set of their own.
Hearing this gave the team at Playwell Bricks a thrill, because this meant the client saw these building sets in action and recognized their value. They saw the public’s reactions firsthand. Maybe they got one for themselves and built it, tapping into the nostalgia and fun factor that bricks can bring. They might have noticed how long that experience stayed with them, the way it made them remember the brand that gave it to them. And they knew they wanted the power of that kind of engagement to work for their brand, so they sought out Playwell Bricks.
Design Matters
Playwell Bricks designer Thiago Brisolla took the lead on the design of this project after helping the original designer with some builder’s block. The client wanted to see their logo come to life in a dynamic way, and the original designer was struggling to bring the one-dimensional image to life in bricks. Thiago’s suggestions were so good that the first designer decided that Thiago’s vision would serve the client best and graciously turned the project over.
“Text logos are always challenging,” explains Thiago. “Finding the right orientation for the bricks is sometimes hard.” At the client’s request, Thiago sent them multiple renders from different angles so they could understand the three-dimensionality of the digital design better, leading to their prompt approval of Thiago’s design.
“I’m pretty happy with the logo because the sideways orientation fits very well in this case, and it is very stable too,” Thiago says, a designer’s pride evident in his voice.
Marketing Moments
Now that the set design was complete, it was time for the Playwell team to design the decal of APS’ larger logo for the base of the set, as well as the packaging and build instructions. APS cleverly took advantage of the opportunity to embed branding messages in both the packaging and the building instructions, reminding the builder who APS is and the advantages they offer their clients.
Here’s a small snippet of the message in the build instructions: “As experts in casualty claims management, [APS helps] clients control costs and improve accuracy throughout the lifecycle of a claim. Just like this custom brick build, every piece has a purpose, and when combined, they help our clients build claims programs that are more efficient, accurate, and cost-effective. This model is a small reminder of what’s possible when the right tools come together.”
Oooh, that’s good.
