Amgen Ireland is a pioneer in the field of biotechnology and also the major sponsor of the Amgen Irish Open, a professional golf tournament in Europe. Sponsoring this tournament gives Amgen Ireland the chance to “support their community and celebrate moments of national pride.” It also gives Amgen a unique opportunity to promote what they do and inspire curiosity about biotechnology. They just needed the perfect promotional item to celebrate the innovative and collaborative spirit of what they do.

Amgen Ireland let the team at Playwell Bricks know exactly what they wanted: a custom designed Playwell Bricks set that replicates a modern biotechnology science lab. Their ideal set would showcase a typical lab environment, with modular workstations, equipment, computers, and a scientist in appropriate lab gear. It would also incorporate their brand colours and logos to “enhance authenticity and pride in our workplace.”

Playwell Bricks designer Petrus Gartler took these ideas and brought them to life in this spectacular brick set. He designed the set “so the side pieces could be rotated, adding to the fun factor” and it’s a detail that really makes this set stand out.

One of the challenges of this set was Amgen’s request for blue hands, indicative of the blue nitrile gloves that their scientists would wear in the lab. While blue hands were available, the practicality of switching out two hands per minifig were beyond the scope of this project. As a compromise, Playwell Bricks added the blue “gloves” to the set as if the scientist was about to put them on at the start of work.

Amgen Ireland also took advantage of Playwell’s encouragement to add brand messaging to the set’s Build Instructions, because, as they put it, “every young mind we inspire today could help solve the next big medical breakthrough of tomorrow.”

The only small challenge was editing the instructions. It was a bit tricky to visualise where changes would appear, so making that process a little more seamless would be great. But overall, this was a very minor issue in an otherwise fantastic experience!”
