Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) is a multinational semiconductor company that produces computer hardware. With trade show season on the horizon, a representative from AMD contacted Playwell Bricks to commission a custom set based upon AMD’s new rack-scale AI supercomputing platform, the AMD Helios.
Beginnings and Renderings
During the original discovery call, the client presented their ideas, explaining that these sets would be given out at AMD’s trade shows and events. Playwell Bricks designed a first concept and sent it through, after which the client grew silent.
A few months later, a new representative from AMD contacted Playwell Bricks. They explained that they’d volunteered to take this project on and were excited to resurrect the custom AMD Helios set. At that first meeting, they explained that AMD had received the first concept, and AMD staff had shared feedback about the concept. “I put all their suggestions into ChatGPT, and this is what it came up with,” they advised, sharing the render.
The Playwell team explained that often AI can invent bricks that don’t exist in the real world, but that they were happy to use the render as a starting point. The client agreed, excited to see what Playwell Bricks would come up with.
Designing the Helios
Playwell Bricks team member Jared Oswald took over the redesign of this project, working with the client’s comments and their render. Jared focused the build complexity on the front of the GPU unit, capturing the details and colours of the real-life unit, and adjusting at the client’s direction.
One sticking point for the client was the shape of the set. They preferred that the sides be lengthened to give a thicker silhouette that better reflected the live unit. Rather than sacrificing complexity on the front of the unit, the client opted to increase the parts budget from the original to get the right shape. Jared complied, and the client was thrilled with the result.
Crisis Averted
At last, everything came together, and this set was ready to go… until a member of the production team noticed a problem. “There was a split forming in the side panels on the model,” Jared recalls.
He went into action immediately, knowing that a problem this late in the time frame could risk the client’s delivery date. “I found a solution that didn’t create a visual change, so there was no need to change the packaging or delay in delivery.” Legend has it his sigh of relief was heard across three states.
