The American Community School of Abu Dhabi is a non-profit, co-ed school founded in 1972. Located in the United Arab Emirates, the school follows the American curriculum, and instruction is given in English. The school is split into three familiar divisions: elementary, middle, and high school.

A contact from the American Community School of Abu Dhabi came to Playwell Bricks to commission a unique gift. They wanted something branded for the school that would represent the area and who they are. Something small and simple would be ideal.

Ultimately, the client decided upon a custom camel set. It was a choice with a wide appeal; camel racing is an extremely popular sport in the United Arab Emirates as well as a powerful symbol of Emirati heritage, resilience, and culture.

The low parts budget presented a unique challenge to the Playwell team. “It’s a building style reminiscent of the old classic brick sets,” says designer Eric Dubois Yang. Far from the stylized builds that are often represented in these commissions, this classic look evokes nostalgia and a certain innocence of creativity.

At ten bricks total in this set, the graphics team had the space of one brick to include the American Community School of Abu Dhabi’s logo. Team member Kostik Poloskin took care to place it in such a way that suited the set and had a pleasing look.

This is the kind of set that stretches a different set of design muscles for the team, but the final set does capture the essence of a camel, childhood, and carries the American Community School of Abu Dhabi’s branding.
