Introduction
The American Community School of Abu Dhabi is a non-profit, co-ed school founded in 1972. Located in the United Arab Emirates, the school follows the American curriculum, and instruction is given in English. The school is split into three familiar divisions: elementary, middle, and high school, while boasting over a thousand students from 80 countries.
The Challenge
A contact from the American Community School of Abu Dhabi came to Playwell Bricks to commission something branded for the school that would represent the area and who they are. Their ideal set would be something small and simple for anyone to build in just a few minutes would be ideal. To emphasize this, the client set the parts budget low.
The Solution
The client decided to create a custom camel set. Camels are an important symbol in the United Arab Emirates, representing cultural heritage, strength, and resilience. Moreover, camel racing is a hugely popular sport, attracting thousands to the raceways in the area.
Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang created this set with “a building style reminiscent of the old classic brick sets.” Far from the stylized builds that are often represented in Playwell Bricks commissions, this classic look evokes nostalgia and an understated innocence of creativity.
With only ten bricks included in this design, the graphics team had the space of one brick to include the American Community School of Abu Dhabi’s branding. Team member Kostik Poloskin took care to place their logo on the largest brick that formed the main body of the camel. Positioning it here also mimics some of the costuming popular for camels and gives the set a pleasing look.
The Result
This is the kind of set that stretches a different set of design muscles for the team, but the final set captures the essence of a camel and, thus, the local culture. It includes the American Community School of Abu Dhabi’s logo in a fun way and in a set that is simple and that the school’s recipients can build in just a few minutes, no matter their skill level.
