Last year, a client contacted Playwell Bricks to see about a custom set made from, in part, genuine LEGO® bricks of his house. He explained that he lived in a house built in 1860 and he wanted to have it recreated in bricks as a gift for his family. Just the house itself, as he wanted his kids to be able to create the interior elements however they liked.

“They were a young family, the kids maybe five and seven,” Playwell Bricks CEO Jason Pyett recalls. “I think it was two or three messages in that I realized that he wanted to create this set because he got a terminal diagnosis.

“This set was among several gifts that he got as legacy gifts for his family. So, I immediately took this to the team. Everybody was on board that we wouldn’t take any payment for the design, so we just charged him for the parts. He paid up for those parts and we got to work.”

Playwell Bricks designer Shimon Bogomolov worked from photos and blueprints to recreate the house in bricks. He brought his impressive geometry skills to the table when he tackled the angles of the house’s attic, relying on Pythagorean triplets to see him through. And they most certainly did.

Throughout the project, other Playwell team members kept checking in and offering their expertise and time in any way they could. It was truly heartwarming to see the care everyone had for this project.

When early renders were sent to the client, his response was ecstatic. “Dang! Amazing! I’ll stare at it some more, but that is super impressive!”

The team got the parts together to begin the test built of Bogomolov’s design, “and that’s when communication with the client stopped,” Pyett recalls.

The team had already been in contact with the client’s architect friend for the blueprints, so Pyett reached out, fearing the worst. His fears were confirmed as he learned that the client had passed away.

The architect was able to put Playwell Bricks in contact with the client's widow to arrange shipping and Playwell sent this very special custom set to the grieving family in time for Christmas.

Pyett still tears up when he talks about this project. As a father of two himself, this project was important to him, as it was to the whole Playwell Bricks team who pitched in whenever they could, and to Bogomolov, who designed a truly impressive set for this gentlemen’s legacy.
