Starfish Space aims to unlock affordable and available satellite servicing with their Otter program. The Otter Pups were designed to service satellites in low Earth orbits, working towards refueling, realignment and even engaging in repairs of the expensive equipment that would normally require full replacement of the satellite unit.

The Otter Pup 2 is Starfish Space’s opportunity to test their software and hardware tech while in orbit, employing their Cetacean and Cephalopod software, as well as their Nautilus docking hardware. The Otter Pup 2’s small size, relative to satellites, and electric propulsion make the Otter Pup 2 make repairs and refueling more affordable than alternatives. That’s a lot to accomplish, and absolutely worth celebrating and commemorating with a team gift employees will be proud to display into the future. “It was an easy design,” Eric recalls. “It’s basically a box, but one of the biggest difficulties was that I want the bottom of the box to also have studs. I had to balance that with making the building process as simple as possible, which meant that my core was actually made of two identical halves to pull it off.”

As a little extra Easter egg, the team at Starfish Space requested that Eric add a translucent yellow brick to the end of the brick Otter Pup 2’s thruster, which their team would recognize to mean the thrusters were active and engaged.
