Stantec is a consulting and design company that is a global leader in engineering and infrastructure, architecture, and environmental consulting. In layman’s terms, Stantec figures out how to build things efficiently, safely, and sustainably. A representative from the company reached out to Playwell Bricks about one of their most important projects of all: a gift for their team members. 

In their discovery call, the client explained that they wanted something that represented Stantec that they could give out as an appreciation gift to their staff. The best gift would be something they could order for their clients as well. “Something they could display on their shelves or their desk.” 

Like many first-time clients, this one wasn’t sure what would be possible, so they brought several possibilities to the meeting. They had an idea that a full drilling scene would be too expansive, but what about a drill or even truck mounted drill rig? The team at Playwell sent concepts to show what these ideas would look like in different sizes. Ultimately, the client chose a truck mounted drill rig, sometimes called a driller truck, for this set. 

There were some details that were important, and the client pointed them out right away. The truck would need to have stabilizers at all four corners as these are vital for safety. The team at Stantec also wanted to make sure that the drill itself would be able to lie down as well as stand up at a 90-degree angle, as this matched how the drill is used on site. 

Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang tackled this project with his usual expertise, bringing this truck mounted drilling rig to life. That 90-degree aspect proved to be an important distinction when the production team noted at a late juncture that the test set couldn’t reach that angle. Eric quickly pivoted, redesigning the drill pieces to ensure the client’s needs were met. After a thumb’s up from the production team, this set was back on track. 

Stantec’s logos were affixed to the doors of this driller truck via decals, and the client shared their marketing content with Playwell for inclusion in the build instructions. After introducing their brand, the content went on to explain that “what’s below the surface matters,” revealing why Stantec chose this truck mounted drill rig to be the subject of this unique gift.
