After the success of their custom Flexpod sets, data management company NetApp remembered Playwell Bricks when they needed a new custom-designed gift for their team. This time, the custom-designed set would be of their new AIPod™, created with Intel.

NetApp commissioned a fully branded, custom brick set of their AIPod™ Mini to help develop a sense of achievement among their team, but that could also be used as a promotional item or gift.

“The design process started with the form of the pod. How do we recreate the texture of the different electric components in bricks?” Playwell Bricks designer Eric Dubois Yang explains.

“This is where I started to look into the underside of some 1x2 bricks with channels, and then positioned them in a way that exposes this usually hidden aspect for aesthetic purposes.

“The next challenge was mainly about trying to make the 2-5 studs-not-on-top ratio work up the front, as we're dealing with 2 different directions. The rest of the build's structure mostly focuses on efficiency in creating a flat, tiled surface to place the branding decals, and to keep it within the budget.”

In addition to the design, NetApp included marketing content in the build instructions, taking advantage of the unique marketing opportunity the instructions offer when the builder is fully engaged with the model and experience.
