Global Maritime is a consultancy firm that specializes in the offshore sector. They boast a multidisciplinary team to help their clients solve complex problems, from oil and gas to renewables and aquaculture. The team at Global Maritime also wanted a unique gift for these same clients, and for that, they contacted Playwell Bricks.
Floating Offshore Wind Turbines
Playwell’s contact at Global Maritime knew exactly what they wanted: a custom Playwell Bricks set of a floating offshore wind turbine that they could pack into a suitcase and carry around the world to meet their clients. But not just one floating offshore wind turbine, after all, there were three main types, each with its particular strengths. The ideal custom set, the client said, should be all three sets in one.
Playwell Bricks designer Pedro Lara took up the challenge of designing this ideal set. Once he understood the physical differences between the three, the design came easier.
From FOWT to FOWT
The first set was what’s known as a spar-type floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT). The second set is a Three-Column Semi-Submersible FOWT and the third is a Four-Column Semi-Submersible FOWT. Pedro represented these columns with yellow bricks, giving each FOWT a different base for each type and purpose.
The ocean itself is represented by a few sculpture techniques in blue and white to represent the caps of waves. With subtle changes to the base and the addition of the yellow columns, this custom-designed set can easily be taken apart and rebuilt as all three floating offshore wind turbines.
Success
Once approved, each of these three sets received special attention in the Build Instructions, each containing a few paragraphs of introduction about what they are and what their strengths are. These sets were then packaged in fully branded pouches so they could fit in the client’s suitcase, just as they requested.
