When is a Fortress Also a Puzzle?
Imagine the excitement: you’re one of the 0.5% of applicants who receive a coveted, 11-week internship at Citadel Securities. You’re nervous, anxious, and excited. You’re on the brink of a career-changing adventure in a fast-paced, thrilling environment, and they’re giving you a gift to welcome you.
What an amazing start to your adventure! You open your gift to find a custom Playwell Bricks set of a puzzle with Citadel’s branding. Inside the instructions, you find a message; “as you lay the first critical blocks of your career, [Citadel Securities] is committed to helping you create a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning and achievements.”
THE GOAL
“Citadel Securities wanted an interesting build as a little present for their incoming interns that represented their brand in a playful way,” Playwell Bricks designer Petrus Gartler explains. “The goal was to design a 3-dimensional puzzle that represented their logo when solved.”
THE PUZZLE
“The hardest thing was to find the sweet spot between three aspects: the building skills of the builders; the time needed to solve the puzzle; and to consideration for Citadel’s design and brand values.”
Ultimately, Petrus created a series of small builds which became the pieces of the puzzle. Once solved, the set would form Citadel Security’s fortress logo. Sets like this are a clever way for brands to have their gift recipients engage directly with their branding.
To create a fun but challenging challenge, Petrus says he had to “Put myself into the shoes of someone who had no idea how to solve the puzzle.” Then, “to ensure we had the right level of difficulty, we had several people test building” the completed set.
Likewise, the building instructions had to be designed so as not to give too much away, hiding the final solution behind a warning so the interns would have a chance to solve the puzzle on their own.
