Blackbird Interactive is an independent game studio behind several games, including Hardspace: Shipbreaker, which launched in 2022. Years later, Blackbird Interactive acquired the Hardspace: Shipbreaker IP, the holidays were coming, and they wanted to celebrate in a spectacular way with their team.

When this game debuted, a LEGO® artist created an expert-level, 3700-piece brick set of a Mackerel ship from the game that delighted the Blackbird Interactive team and gamers alike. For this celebration, Blackbird Interactive wanted to create a nod to that early milestone, but this time, they’d like to stick with something smaller that could employ bulk manufacturing to supply 500 sets to the studio for their team and beyond.

Blackbird Interactive would like this new set to be another of the same class of ship, but this time, the ship would be designed with the in-game company LYNX Corp’s branding.

“This project was interesting,” Playwell Bricks designer Jared Oswald recalls. “The target part count was 25-30 for the ship, which is very small, and it forced an odd build. The front and back halves of the ship are built separately and then are connected in the final steps of the build. It’s a very satisfying little model, and they seemed very happy with it.”

With these new Mackerel sets, Blackbird Interactive has a fun, interactive new way to celebrate the IP of Hardspace: Shipbreaker with their team in a way that recalls how they first celebrated the launch of the game.
