How this Custom Set Celebrates Religious Freedom
Introduction
Becket is a non-profit law firm in the United States dedicated to protecting the First Amendment right of religious freedom. Once a year, Becket hosts a gala, and this year a representative from the firm reached out to Playwell Bricks for a custom VIP gift to give out at this gala.
The Challenge
At their discovery call, the client explained that they wanted to do something special, especially since this year was also the 250th anniversary of the U.S. This year the gala was being held at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, the place where religious freedom was originally written into the Constitution. To tie all of these details together, the client had been thinking about a Liberty Bell set with the Becket logo.
For global historical context, the Liberty Bell was housed in the same building where the Constitution was drafted and signed. It was also rung to commemorate that signing in 1787, making it directly linked to religious freedoms.
The client explained that they have a six-inch replica of the Liberty Bell in the Becket offices. “We ring our Liberty Bell after each court victory; its small but mighty tolls remind us of the liberty that we fight for every day.” This custom set would be something that gets to the heart of what they do.
The Solution
Playwell Bricks team member Petrus Gartler was tapped to design this project. The crack in the Liberty Bell was an important detail that he could represent via bricks or through the use of a graphic. He ultimately chose to go with building the crack into the bricks design as he felt it would be authentic.
He designed the bell so that it could swing as the real bell does, asking this project’s test builder, Tim Howell, to show how this swing worked with both friction and non-friction pins so he could make the best choice. The friction pins allowed the bell to swing when moved, but the bell would remain in a slanted position on its own. The non-friction pins allowed the bell to swing easier, and always subjected to gravity, which Petrus was hoping to achieve, so these were the pins that made the final set.
In the meantime, the client prepared marketing content explaining their work and the significance of the Liberty Bell to religious freedoms to be included in the Build Instructions. This content would be the first page Becket’s recipients read as they open the Instructions, keeping the message in their minds as they build their very own Liberty Bell.
The Result
With this custom Liberty Bell set, Becket has a tangible representation of everything they work so hard for, something symbolic, historic, and close to their hearts, to share with their gala attendees.
Quote
“Thank you for all of the work you and your team have done to make our Becket Liberty Bell come to life. The bells were a HUGE hit... so much so that we might need to order more!”
