The Secret Role of Setbacks in Success
The journey towards success is often peppered with unforeseen events, sometimes even mishaps that change the course of our lives and sometimes, our businesses. Such is the story of Playwell Bricks CEO Jason Pyett, whose accident in his woodworking shop became the catalyst for founding a thriving business.
THE ACCIDENT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Nine years ago this autumn, Jason was building a Hobbit house. The house was framed up and already the talk of the neighbourhood.
Then it happened. “This is what happens when your push block slips, your board kicks back, and your fingers meet the table saw blade,” he wrote on a social media post about the accident. “It could have been much worse… it may be a VERY long time before I go back to work in the shop.”
THE AFTERMATH
Something that struck Jason during his convalescence is the number of woodworking enthusiasts who would pat him on the back, saying, “the first accident is always the most jarring.”
“The first!” Jason says, still incredulous nine years later. In the end, he escaped with only the loss of a fingertip, but he wasn’t willing to give the hobby anymore of himself.
Happily, the void in his life without carpentry as a creative outlet was soon filled with bricks, a passion that only grew as he leaned into it. One of the philosophies that Jason shares with Playwell Bricks designers is that “no time and effort is ever lost if you learn from it.” His experience woodworking no doubt strengthened the spatial IQ that still serves him well as a brick designer.
DETERMINATION AND RESILIENCE
That autumn incident, although painful at the outset, is an inspiring reminder that setbacks are not the end of the world. Sometimes, they’re a detour to something much greater.
It’s a perspective that has helped Jason to meet every successive setback since with resilience and determination. This attitude keeps Playwell Bricks forward-thinking and adaptive, unlocking a proactive strategy that enables Playwell Bricks to offer clients innovative solutions.
And while Jason never did finish that Hobbit house, he certainly has completed many memorable builds since!
