On a recent trip, the CEO of Playwell Bricks, Jason Pyett, had the incredible opportunity to visit the iconic Stata Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a building that holds a special place in Playwell Bricks’ history. A few years ago, our team was commissioned to recreate the Stata Center in LEGO® bricks, and it quickly became one of our more ambitious (and unusual!) custom builds.

Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the Stata Center is a striking blend of asymmetrical angles, bold curves, and gravity-defying forms. It’s a building that demands attention and one which presented a thrilling challenge for our team of designers.

All told, six Playwell Bricks designers collaborated to bring this project to brick-life, each bringing their unique skills to tackle the complexity of the architecture. The result was a stunning brick-built replica that delighted our client and became a highlight of our custom portfolio.

Standing before the real structure in Cambridge, MA, Jason had some big feelings. “It is always an incredible feeling to visit a place we have recreated in LEGO® form. This one more than others was an incredible effort, but visiting in real life, I can tell you, our custom-designed set is very much spot on.”

Seeing the real-life inspiration up close was a full-circle moment that reinforced just how much thought and dedication went into the original model. The Stata Center didn’t just test the team’s technical skills; it pushed them creatively and inspired them to (quite literally!) think outside the box.

This visit was more than just a tour. It was a celebration of design, collaboration, and the creative possibilities that emerge when architecture meets imagination. We’re proud of the work our team accomplished and grateful for the inspiration that spaces like the Stata Center continue to provide.
