POV: a Playwell Bricks client

“Playwell Bricks was put on my radar by a peer at conference who had commissioned a custom Playwell set as a sort of swag gift. People really seemed intrigued by the [bricks] angle and excited about it. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I supposed artists who work in building bricks should be fun to work with.”

Well, you can take it from my perspective: they’re not wrong. I’m speaking with a Playwell Bricks client about their experience from the other side of the custom set.

Their name will be kept to myself for security reasons, to add a sense of mystery, and because there’s an employee whose still upset that they only got one set when Wallace from accounts bragged that they got two. “Impossible,” says the client, clearly annoyed.

“So I booked an initial meeting with [Playwell Bricks CEO] Jason [Pyett]. It was laid back, but professional. Nothing artsy-fartsy,” they insist.

IDEA GENERATION

“I went in with an idea that I thought was brilliant, but I quickly learned that we’d have to quadruple our budget.”

Why was that? “Just to represent the elements that I was pointing out. Each of them represented a different department, so we couldn’t have some and leave out others without making a lot of people unhappy. To pull it off, the set would have had to be huge.

“Jason suggested we use that idea as a jumping off point. We brainstormed for a while until we hit on something even better.”

DESIGN AND PRODUCTION

I ask them what happened after they decided on the subject of their custom Playwell Bricks set.

“Then my part was done! A little while later Jason sent me the final design for approval – I think we did tweak a few things, but I can’t remember the details right now.

“Jason shipped me a prototype so I could build the set before I gave the final okay and they would shift into production. Let me tell you, when you suddenly start building a bricks set at your desk in the middle of the day, people notice.” They chuckle.

“I goofed, got distracted by a case, and didn’t respond right away, which held up production, but that was on me. Jason reached out when he grew concerned and got things back on track.”

THE GIVING EXPERIENCE

“From there it was just a waiting game until the sets came in. Our staff were really excited when we gave them out. A lot of them sat down and built them right away. There was a QR code with their sets that they could scan and the instructions would come up on their phone.

“Some of them were grinning like little kids. It was nice to see.

“I like that these custom sets give us the chance to offer our staff a sort of trinket, but one that’s also connected to a fun experience they can share with their coworkers and maybe take home to share with their families too.”
