Did you know that Playwell Bricks CEO Jason Pyett received his first ever paid commission in January of 2019? It was a milestone that not only marked a new year, but the business that Playwell Bricks would soon become.

This first commission came as a challenge: to recreate the Argonath from the Lord of the Rings, the iconic gate captured so beautifully in the 2001 film Fellowship of the Ring. At this point, Jason had been designing sets from various game and film franchises, so this fit neatly into his aesthetic.

The commission also arrived at a time when Jason was asking himself if he could ever make money doing brick designs, so he didn’t hesitate, not even for a moment.

Knowing that it was best to just start rather than deliberating too long, he began the design with the kings’ heads, which he’d determined to be the most difficult sections. Once he had those designed, the rest would come.

Jason spent three months on that original design, and then another three months building the set.

At the time, I followed his updates on social media with curiosity. I’ll never forget the day I met him for coffee and he opened the trunk of his car to show me the Argonath in real life.

The photos I had seen didn't prepare me for the scope of this build. I insisted he pose beside it so I could take a picture, and I’m so glad he did.

The water he created fascinated me. “It’s not just blue,” Jason explained. “I wanted the water to have actual depth. It’s actually three plates deep. You can look in and see colors underneath the surface.”

Until I saw the Argonath that afternoon in the trunk of Jason’s car, I had no idea bricks were capable of such artistic vision. And well, look how far Jason’s come from there, a CEO of an internationally established design company creating everyday masterpieces for brands we all know and love.
